“The construction industry builds a nation, but at its core, it is about people.”
This was the central theme of the 2025 NZCBIA Annual Construction Report, launched this week at the New Zealand Parliament.

A Report Focused on People

Authored by leading economist Shamubeel Eaqub, this year’s report placed a new and vital focus on people.

As a well-known Māori proverb asks:
“He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.”
What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.

The report highlights that the construction industry is not only a critical economic driver but also deeply tied to the lives of all New Zealanders. Key insights include:

 

    • Productivity as a strategic opportunity, requiring clear and proactive leadership.

    • Construction as a nation-builder, directly employing over 281,000 people and supporting hundreds of thousands more across its supply chain.

    • Cyclical challenges, with delayed projects expected to fuel a powerful upswing in activity once conditions improve.

    • People as the foundation, where training, leadership, and retention are far more critical than recruitment alone.
